Safety Tips - Questions for the Technician
BEFORE INSTALLATION (continued from previous page)
- The first thing we recommend is to ask the technician the same questions you asked the company to see if you get the same response.
- Ask him to explain the safety role of the windshield. (The short version, it reinforces the strength of the roof to prevent the roof from collapsing in a roll over an accident, it works in conjunction with the passenger side air bag, and it prevents occupants from being ejected).
Does he remove the wiper arms and the cowl panel? (Any vehicle that has a cowl panel that sets on top of the glass should be removed, it is impossible to insure all scratches are primed and a good seal is achieved with the cowl panel on). The cowl panel is located below the wiper arms and is basically a cover for the well where the wiper motor and transmission is located. - Does he prime all scratches that expose bare metal? (We prime all scratches even if bare metal is not exposed, better safe than sorry.)
- Does he remove excessive urethane from the pinch weld base and walls if there is any possibility he may have scratched the metal below the urethane? (This is extremely important, since most rust starts from underneath the urethane because the urethane was not removed to expose the scratch before the pinch weld was primed.)
- Does he remove the remainder of the urethane form the pinch weld base leaving 1 to 2 millimeters to apply the new bead of urethane? (The answer should be yes.)
- How tall of a urethane bead does he apply for the new windshield? ( As tall as or slightly taller then the pinch weld wall.)
